LARGS SC's MAGNIFICENT VOLUNTEERS at the RYA Youth Championships were recognised at a reception in the clubhouse last weekend. A grand total of 89 volunteers helped on committee boats, RIBs, slipways, bridge, car parks, media, house and catering duties…and in all the preparation work leading up to the championships, and the clear up after.
We had 154 boats from all over the UK, 218 sailors, so with visiting race officials, parents etc, there were around 800 visitors to Largs, all requiring accommodation for a week or more, contributing over £250,000 to the local economy - and the club made a reasonably good surplus from the event, despite the adverse weather conditions of the first two days.
Indeed, the weather was "challenging", with gusts of 47 knots recorded on the Monday - then we had balmy sunshine on Thursday! Princess Anne should have come every day! However, all fleets sailed at least 8 races, and 50 races in total were sailed over the three race areas. Ashore, 700 portions of pasta were served, plus 200 portions of chips, 240 breakfast rolls - and 30 pieces of fruit …
So, a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all volunteers - not only from the club, but also from the competitors - with some very positive feedback:
- Great championship venue; professional, friendly, caring; great sailing.
- As usual LSC gave us a very warm welcome and their staff and volunteers are fabulous.
- Great for sailors to have pasta and well priced food at club - lovely volunteers. Thank You.
- As both a parent of a child competing at the Youth Nationals and a Committee member of the 29er Class, I would like to add my thanks to all the volunteers. It was a challenging week and everybody was extremely helpful. Thank you!
