The prizegiving for the Two Handed Race was held on Sunday 5th September, with trophies presented by Ken McClelland, who founded the race in 1988, as a short handed race for keelboats, around Arran (approximately 80 miles) or Holy Isle (approximately 40 miles).

In turn, Ken himself, and his long time sailing partner Tom MacFadyen, were presented with gifts by John Ridley (also, like Ken, a former two-time commodore of Largs SC) and Eileen Rae, Fairlie YC commodore, to recognise their contribution to this long standing and very popular event.

Dingies Race Start

To end the 2021 season the LSTA ran the hiking viking event with two races planned over two nights. There was no wind on the first night so we ran a treasure hunt. However on Wednestay there was some wind in between the showers. Although there was not a lot of wind strength there was a lot of wind direction. The wind came from every point of the compass at some point. As all the Cadets sailed around a triangular course just off the club.

A great weekend for our first cruise in company since the end of 2019! We had possibly a record 12 boats, with 32 members and guests, participating over the weekend of 14-15 August – Inclination, Ghoster, Kaos II, Drifter, Maddison, Phisha, Ann of Bookham, Cilaos, Icarus, Dipper, Sunshine, and Night Owl. Many of these boats were new to our c-in-c’s, and even quite new members of the club, so it was great to see them joining in with such enthusiasm.

After a forecast of no wind, it was good to have some wind for Sunday's Round Cumbraes – even if it was sometimes frustratingly variable in strength and direction. Over the weekend, Crawford Reid and Nada Shehab from Strathclyde Loch in their Albacore narrowly topped the fast handicap fleet. In the slow hadicap fleet, Roddy Steel from Keyhaven YC in his Finn similarly was only a point ahead of the pursuing pack. Largs SC's David and Ian Kent in their Hurricane took top spot in the catamarans.

Largs Sailing Club

Largs Sailing Club was founded in 1936, and is now based in a modern clubhouse in Largs Yacht Haven, just to the south of Largs.

The Club organises a range of activities for all ages and abilities, from the teaching of beginners by the LSTA to hosting large national and world championship events. We also run regular racing for dinghies and keelboats. Our active cruising section (sail and power) organises cruises in company around the Clyde and the west of Scotland, and holds regular talks and skills workshops. Throughout the year, we hold quiz nights, talks with guest speakers, and themed evenings including dances and parties.

Our waterfront location gives us the best view in the marina, as can be seen from the LSC WebCam. Our Lookout Lounge has a well-stocked bar and good bar food at reasonable prices, making it a welcoming port of call for members and guests.

Rooms in our clubhouse are available to hire for any occasion - business meetings, charity lunches, birthday parties, weddings, sail training, art exhibits etc., and are complete with wireless internet and AV equipment. Our fully licensed bar and catering facilities can meet your most exacting requirements.

The hot drinks vending machine on the top landing is always available along with a kettle. Please feel free to use your clubhouse as somewhere to meet your friends in a Covid-friendly environment. Bosuns Cafe is open every day so you could grab a hot toastie or some hot soup to enjoy upstairs in the lounge.

The building will also open outwith the above hours for pre-arranged club socials and training. When using the changing rooms please remember not to leave any kit in there.

NEWSLETTERS - CATCH UP ON THE ARCHIVE!

All regular club activities were suspended after lockdown began at the end of March last year, and the last "normal" newsletter was on 1st March 2020, which reported on a breezy Harken New Year race, standing room only at the first winter cruising talks, and our stalwart maintenance volunteers getting the clubhouse shipshape for the new season, including shower upgrades. Little did we anticipate what was to follow ...

Lockdown restrictions were eased through last summer, into autumn, allowing our dinghy sailors to participate in social sailing, then organised racing was possible through the autumn. Our cruising sailors and motor boaters were also active in the second half of last season, and you can read about these activities on our Facebook pages. After a long winter in lockdown, coronavirus estrictions have been eased significantly, club racing has restarted, our clubhouse is open again, we have hosted the 29er and D-Zero Nationals, and Largs Regatta Fetival, plus many of our cruising members are getting out and about. Keep safe, and enjoy looking back in the newsletter archive!
