Talk by John Riddell on the development of Fife's boatbuilding yard in Fairlie
Sun 12th Jun 2022
To complement the 2022 Fife Regatta, Largs SC Member and Fairlie resident John Riddell gave an excellent talk Fife and Fairlie to members and guests in a packed Hems Kalis Room, after we'd watched the boats start the Rothesay race in the morning.
John described the development of the William Fife yacht building yard once located in Fairlie’s Bay Street and discussed how the yard contributed to the expansion of the village from a few fishermen’s houses to that which exists today.
The name ‘Fife of Fairlie’ became synonymous with the design and construction of beautiful wooden racing yachts, and gave Fairlie a fame which still extends far beyond its coastal location. Twenty-four of the historic Fife yachts are competing in this year’s regatta with racing taking place throughout the Firth of Clyde between Saturday 11th and Friday 17th June.
The talk was illustrated by images of both the Fife yard and Fairlie over the last 200 years.
Many thanks John!
